Hours Calculator
Add a week of shifts, deduct unpaid breaks, and get accurate hours and decimals immediately.
- Features others lock behind paywalls
- Fewer clicks, keyboard friendly
A standard 9–6 week with a one-hour unpaid lunch is ready to check.
An end time earlier than its start is calculated as an overnight shift.
Your week is saved in this browser only.
How to use
- Review the ready-made Monday–Friday 9–6 schedule, or enter your own start and end time for each day.
- Enter each day’s unpaid break in minutes; leave it at 0 when no time should be deducted.
- Read each daily net time and the weekly total in hours and minutes or decimal hours.
- Copy the weekly summary when you need to paste it into a timesheet or message.
How weekly work hours are calculated
For each completed row, net work time = (end time − start time) − unpaid breaks. The calculator adds the exact integer minutes from every valid day first, then converts the weekly total to decimal hours. This prevents the rounding differences that come from adding daily decimal values.
If an end time is earlier than its start time, it is treated as a next-day finish. For example, 22:00–06:00 is 8 hours on the clock; with a 30-minute unpaid break, the net result is 7 hours 30 minutes (7.50 decimal hours). Equal start and end times count as 0 hours.
Hours and minutes are not decimal hours
A decimal hour is minutes divided by 60, not a clock-style display. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. That means 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 hours, not 8.30.
Use the hours-and-minutes total to check a time record and the decimal total when a payroll, invoice, or spreadsheet asks for a number of hours.
What this calculator does and does not decide
Enter only breaks that should be deducted from paid work time. Whether a meal, rest break, on-call period, training, travel, overtime, or rounding rule counts as paid time depends on your workplace rules and applicable law.
This tool performs time arithmetic only. It does not determine overtime eligibility, premiums, pay, legal break entitlement, or payroll rounding. Check your employer’s policy or a qualified local adviser for those decisions.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?
Subtract the unpaid lunch from the elapsed shift time. A 09:00–18:00 shift is 9 hours on the clock; subtracting a 60-minute unpaid lunch gives 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours.
How are overnight shifts calculated?
When the end time is earlier than the start time, this calculator treats it as the following day. A 22:00–06:00 shift spans 8 hours before any unpaid break is deducted.
What is 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal hours?
Seven hours 45 minutes is 7.75 decimal hours because 45 divided by 60 equals 0.75. The calculator displays both formats so you do not need to convert it manually.
Are my work times uploaded or stored online?
No. Calculations run in your browser, and the week is saved only in that browser’s local storage to survive a refresh. It is not sent to Betterbit or any payroll service.
