The original stays unchanged. A separate _numbered.pdf file downloads.

How to use

  1. Drop one PDF into the file area or choose it from your device.
  2. Set the page range, or use Skip cover page to begin numbering on page 2.
  3. Choose one of six positions and a number format.
  4. Set the first number, font size, and margin in PDF points.
  5. Check the number preview, then select Add numbers & download.

Page range and first number are separate controls

Pages to number decides where the visible label is drawn; First number decides the value on the first selected page. For a 12-page file with a cover, choose 2-12 and leave First number at 1. The second physical page then shows 1, and the last page shows 11. A range such as 1-3, 5, 8-10 is read as physical PDF page positions, not numbers already printed in the document.

Choose a label that matches the document

Use 1 for a minimal footer, Page 1 for a report, Page 1 of 10 when readers need the final number, or 1/10 for a compact form. The “of” total is the final displayed number, so a selected range of 10 pages starting at 3 reads Page 3 of 12 through Page 12 of 12. Each label is placed separately using that page’s own width and height, which keeps mixed-size PDFs aligned to the selected corner or centre.

The existing PDF page content is not rasterized

The tool adds a text layer to the selected original pages and saves a new PDF; it does not turn pages into screenshots first. Font size and margin use PDF points, where 72 points equal 1 inch. The practical local-processing limit is one PDF up to 100 MB and 500 pages, which keeps browser memory use bounded. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked before they can be modified.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF without uploading it?

Choose a PDF, set its page range and number format, then download the result. This tool reads, edits, and saves the document in the browser on your device; the PDF is not uploaded to a Betterbit server.

How do I leave the PDF cover page unnumbered?

After choosing the PDF, select Skip cover page. The page range changes to pages 2 through the end, and First number is set to 1, so the first visible number appears on the second physical page.

Can I number only some PDF pages?

Yes. Enter a page range such as 1-3, 5, 8-10 in Pages to number. Numbers are drawn only on those selected physical pages and increase in page order.

What does Page 1 of 10 mean when numbering starts at another number?

The last number reflects the starting number plus the number of selected pages minus one. For 10 selected pages starting at 3, the labels run from Page 3 of 12 to Page 12 of 12.

Does adding page numbers reduce PDF quality?

The tool adds selectable text to the existing PDF pages instead of replacing pages with images. Existing text, vector artwork, and embedded images are not intentionally rasterized by the page-numbering step.

What PDF size can I number here?

This tool accepts one readable, unprotected PDF up to 100 MB and 500 pages so the full operation can remain responsive in a browser tab.
